Beyond Greens: Supporting Local Agriculture

Update

Awhile ago, I mentioned that we signed up for a weekly CSA basket from Lufa Farms. Community supported agriculture (CSA) is now a fairly widespread movement, but when I was growing up, my parents were one of the firsts in our region to get involved. In the late 80s / early 90s, they used to get a weekly box from the organic & biodynamic farm La Généreuse in Lennoxville. My dad would drive one hour each way to pick up the organic box directly from the farm. How’s that for dedication! My dad always goes to great lengths for what he believes in. [Je t’aime papa].

Lufa Farms offer an interesting twist on the CSA experience, in that it’s a farm in the middle of the city (Montréal). Founded in 2009, Lufa built the first commercial rooftop greenhouse in an attempt to create an ecologically and economically sustainable model for urban farming. That means recycling water, optimizing energy use and growing without any synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. Lufa also partners with dozens of local producers (many of which are organic) so as to diversify product selection and availability. Their latest innovation includes an online marketplace where we can customize the content of our basket.

As a matter of fact, I finalized the content of tomorrow’s basket online just before writing this post. I’m excited to get jerusalem artichokes and fiddleheads, among many other fresh vegetables this week. Below you will find pictures of the produce in last week’s basket. Our basket (size = small) included:

  • 2 boston lettuce
  • 1 braising mix (kale, mizuna & chard)
  • 1 bag of arugula
  • 2 beefsteak tomatoes
  • 1 yellow cocktail tomato
  • 1 sweet yellow pepper
  • 1 eggplant
  • 1 pound carrots
  • 3 lebanese cucumbers (I got hungry on the walk home, so only two are pictured)

As our box gets delivered in our neighbourhood on Tuesdays, Jason and I started a weekly “Lufa salad” dinner tradition on that night. Last week, we enjoyed it with a side of spanakopita outside on the balcony. It was lovely.

Bonne semaine!
